characteristic that invites new artists
The medium of acrylic paint is a relatively new addition to the painting mediums available to artists today. There since 1950 and has been in constant evolution and improvement since then.
Acrylic paint is highly favored amongst artists because of its extraordinary versatility. It can be applied as a slurry to the rich texture or in washes mimicking the characteristics of watercolor.
Another interesting feature of the acrylic paint is its permanence. Acrylic paint is not susceptible to yellowing or hardening with age. With acrylic paint, the artist does not need to worry about the paint is applied or other special techniques that ensure the paint film remains free from cracking. We can therefore say that the acrylic paint is much easier to use than oil paintings.
Another characteristic that invites new artists to this medium is its fast drying. Since acrylic paint dries very quickly, the colors can be applied quickly and covered with oil paint.
But there are some drawbacks to both quick-drying acrylic paints:
1) The paint will not remain viable for a long time, so you must work quickly.
2) The fast drying time of acrylics can also ruin brushes if the brushes are not cleaned immediately.
3) acrylic paint is not the best way for direct exterior paint, especially in a sunny day. Whatever you put paint on your palette will start to dry quickly and form a film on the surface of the painting which makes it very difficult to work with.
Watercolor effects
Acrylic paint works wonderfully as a transparent medium, like watercolors. Acrylics have an advantage over watercolors. You can define a series of thin washes over one another without fear of disturbing the colors below. You must wait for a layer to dry completely before applying another of course. Once each layer dries, it becomes insoluble in water. The only drawback of acrylic as a medium of watercolor is the difficulty in changing the color. Once the acrylic paint begins to dry, it becomes quite difficult to work with. A major problem is the tendency for washes to dry with unwanted edges. You can avoid this problem in one of two ways. You can wet the paper before the paint is applied or you can use an additional brush dampened with water. Use a brush to apply paint and immediately soften the edges with the brush of others that have been soaked in water
